Yes. Domain registration and hosting do not have to be from the same place.

Yes – some even argue it's better to do that, since you have more control of each that way.

Nevertheless, it does become a little more complicated – you will need to point your domain's nameservers at your new hosting account. Your host will provide the nameservers, and your domain provider will have documentation on how to change the nameservers.

  3. Be careful… Technically you can register your domain name anywhere and use it with a completely separate host. However, there are some companies which register the domain name, set it up for their hosting package but then don't give you access to the domain settings – meaning you won't be able to host the site somewhere else.

Stick with good registrars though (places like GoDaddy.com, and you will be fine. You simply need the 'nameserver' details from your chosen host – but they will explain all that when you purchase your hosting plan.

    Good luck.

Typically yes, but it might depend on the contract you agreed to with the domain name purchase.

You should be able to purchase a hosting service from another site, and then have your DNS entries changed for your domain name so that visiting the domain name (www.example.org) will resolve to the correct IP address (206.105.71.72, or whatever your hosting service tells you to do).

This process may also be handled automatically for your by the hosting service.
