Since the web is public domain, why is it considered unethical to download a site and refabricate it?

Why does everyone have a problem with taking a website
complete with template, graphics, html and metatags and
reworking the site to create your own.
It should be a compliment to the original`s website designer.
Anything on the web is public domain….websites included.
Ahhh…Oh Yea, Don`t bother trying to take mine, I haven`t published one yet….
Thanks for takin the time out from this great weather/weekend to read this blog

most people are stingy and protect their source code with their life (like MICROSOFT). If you got stuff from open-source people they probably wouldn't care, since that's what open-source is about.

  2. Look for stuff released under Creative Commons License, this is a kind of open source license for creative works. use other people works to develop your own ideas, ideas are not copyrighted. Learn how they did and do it your own way, you can also help moving the Internet.

  3. Umm… The web isn't public domain. Just because it's openly accessible doesn't mean there's no copyright on it – you wouldn't expect to be able to republish a book you took out of the library under your own name and get away with it, would you?

It's perfectly reasonable for somebody to want their site to have a unique look. Also, if somebody's worked hard for hours and hours on their site, some loser spending 5 minutes with wget to rip their work doesn't seem fair.

There is nothing wrong with looking at a page to see how something is done, and re-implementing the effect yourself… nobody should get stressed over a few lines of CSS here and there. In fact, if somebody was polite enough to e-mail me and ask me, I'd likely be very liberal in the permissions I granted, as long as they weren't taking the mick.

However, if somebody annoyed me sufficiently, I would have no problem in taking the action needed to get their site pulled. Before now, I've had a site kicked off not one, but two ISPs after they spammed a forum I moderate.
