infinite- they will just have to keep getting longer
They have actually already made a new ones, they arent not used much if you only go out to 15 spaces and only count letters and numbers, there are 221073919720733357899776 possibilities. I personally wouldnt want to type more than 15 letters…
if your talking about endings- like.com and .net and .gov, its 17,576 only counting letters, or 46,656 letters and numbers.
In the URL yahoo.com, yahoo is referred to as the second level label. These labels can be between 3 and 63 characters long and can include letters, numbers and the hyphen (-). They also have to start with a letter and finish with a letter or number.
For a 3 character label, there are 34,632 different possible combinations. For a 4 character label there are 1,246,752 different combinations. So we are already up to 1,281,384 different domain names.
If we keep expanding to 63 characters and then add in all the different top level domains like .net, .org, .edu, .gov and so on the number of possible second level domains is so big that it won't fit into my head! Let's not even start with sub-domains.
So while the number of domain combinations is theoretically finite, the number is so big that you could practically consider it to be infinite.
Don't forget though, that there are some reserved domain names but the number of these is only very small. I haven't factored these into my calculations.
