Why do I need to pay a company to register a domain name?

Why can't I register a domain name myself for free? who are they getting the domain name from the government? Why do I need to go through them/what would I need to do it without them?
So if I have my own server, I do not need to pay anyone to register a domain name?

The domain name has to be purchased thru an accredited ICANN seller .It costs around $6000.00 plus a $70,000 credit line to become approved..

The domain seller registers name for you. Then you have right to name as long as you keep renewing it.

It cost's them 25 cents to register the name and they charge between $2.99 to $35.00 per year

About the only rule is you can't infringe on rights of other companys but some other stickler rules

  3. Even if you use your own server, you are paying a registry to let you use the domain name. When you pay for a domain, you are paying the .com or .net or .whatever regestry. You cannot get around this.

Domain name registration keeps domain names unique. Otherwise there would 50000 webpages all called yahoo.com, It is just common sense.
