Find the domain of each function?

Posted on Jul 17, 2008 under domain news and reports | 11 Comments

F(x) = 3X^2 + 8X + 12
—————
X^2 – 3X – 28

Key: "^" is an exponent. So X^2 means X to the second power

The problem is tough to read, but its 3X squared plus 8X plus 12 all over X squared minus 3X minues 28.

PLEAAAASE help if you can :) :) : )

  1. The domain is all the possible numbers that you could pick for x. In this case, that would be all real numbers.

  2. I would hate to meet you in future years and hear you say, "Uh, you want fries with that?" If that freaks you out too, then do your own homework.

    Domain means solve for X.

  3. David La Pierre Says:

The only reason here you could not have a number as x is if the denominator of the fraction equals zero.

SO set the quadratic equal to zero, use the quadratic formula and solve

    (-b±(b^2-4ac))/(2a)
    3±11/2
    14/2 and -8/2

x is all reals except 7 and -4

  4. My Beautiful Self Says:

The domain of a rational function like this one is all real numbers that do not make the denominator a zero. So find the zeroes (x-intercepts) of the function in the denominator…and the domain is all real numbers except those two.

  5. Tom Joad, maybe he can become a good writer, or an artist.
But, any case, better to do the homework even if you dislike some of them.

If this can help you, when someone ask you for the "domain" means that you have to find all X valid values. In this case, the denominator (X^2-3X-28) can become 0 for certain values of X. So, those values have to be excluded from the "domain".

    Solve for:
    X^2-3X-28=0

In this case, you will find 2 values. Those values are the ones that makes a "division by 0" and has to be excluded from domain.

    Good luck!
