Can lunarpages.com use my domain name to promote sponsored advertising?

I have a website hosted with Lunarpages. Last week I found that the standard 404 error page had been replaced with a page using my domain name to recommend links to dating and other questionable sites. When I complained about this unauthorized use of the domain name, they rewrote their Terms of Service document after the fact to give themselves the right to use a clients domain name in any way they wish. Is this legal?

    The first thing to do is a domain name look-up on your domain ( http://centralops.net/co/DomainDossier.vbs.asp ) and see who is listed as being the owner of the domain. I have seen many times where these "free domain for life" web hosting sites have themselves listed as owner of the domain name. If you are listed as the owner of the domain the easiest solution is to just move your domain to another provider. as far as being legal i have seen many businesses change their "terms of service" leaving it up to the client if they want to stay there or move to another provider. This may just be the tip of the iceberg if you discover that the domain name is not registered to you.

    This sounds like a pretty shady practice. Domain companies shouldn't do something like this. One I know of that has great, 24-hour service and would never do something like this is Bargain Beaver (bargainbeaver.com), a new domain company has domains for only $1.99 a year with hosting. Their regular domain price is only $6.95–that's more than 3 bucks cheaper than GoDaddy. You could transfer your domain to Bargain Beaver and even get a free 1-year extension…the dating page would be gone from your domain and you would be all set. I hope this helps.
