What's the cheapest way to retain a domain name?

I purchased a domain name (e.g. www.mydomain.com) from one of those "get a domain for $1.99" deals a year ago, now the renewal fee for it is $50 (for one additional year). Aren't there cheaper options that I can explore BEFORE my year is up on the $1.99 deal? I'd like to retain the domain name, as I'm hopefully planning to use it for a website at the end of the year. How can I keep my domain name, how would I transfer elsewhere, and how much should it cost, since I don't have any hosting for it at this point?

I am looking for a server that's not going to cost an arm and a leg to download and beable to run from my computer with out to much trouble..I have some backgrounds and images that I would like to code so people could use them on neopets and my space..I know there are some free hosting servers out there I have two already but that's not enough I need more cause I had some requests that I need to fill…any help would be great!
