I have a site with GoDaddy.com, which requires me to upload things via FTP. But none of the FTP programs I use can “connect to the remote server”. What does this mean? What can I do to fix this?

I bought a domain name, now what??? I want to enter in HTML using tables (i created my original website in Photoshop and Imageready) how can I go about doing this? I ausually upload the images on photobucket, and enter them into the table, but ive never used godaddy before!!!! so, do I have to have it hosted at godaddy? and if so, where do I enter in my HTML & do edits?! is there a good website for hosting that might be FREE with minimal-no ads??
