I’m purchasing a website from HostGator, & I have no idea what these things are?

CGI, PHP 5, RoR, Perl, MySQL, SSH, SSL, IMAP, POP???

What are those things?

All I want to do is have a blog with my own url that I can put pictures on. I don’t understand.

Also, it was telling me all kinds of things about FTP files? What are those?

oh dear. You might want to do a little more research.
I don’t know all of it, but I will explain what I know.

PHP 5, RoR, Perl – If I’m correct, coding your server can support.
MySQL – A database used commonly for forums. Google it.
SSH – A secure connection between two databases
    IMAP, POP – Email Servers
FTP – File Transfer Protocol – An FTP client will allow you to upload files to your web server.

Some of these are a little complex (RoR, Perl, PHP, IMAP/POP) for beginners to understand, but if you don’t know about FTP, then you might need some help setting up the site.

Why buy something you don’t know how to use? Yahoo offers a web page for $ 1.99 first year, and they are so user friendly you will be up and running before you can say: "Peek-a-boo". Without knowing anything!!
    Peace.

Why do you care? You want a blog with photos, I assume HostGator supports that or you wouldn’t even consider them. You can just ignore all the other stuff.
