Thinking about switching domain clients from yahoo to godaddy or another, is there a difference besides price?
Posted on Oct 29, 2009 under GoDaddy.com | 149 CommentsI currently have my domain through yahoo small business and i’m paying $12 dollars a month and i checked out godaddy.com and its saying they charge 9.99 per year. which is a huge drop in price from what im paying. is there anything different between the two such as support, what i can do put on my page. performance?

Yahoo! is not even an accredited registrar. They’re just a reseller.
I would strongly encourage you to do the transfer, not just to save money, but for security and the ability to have greater control over your domain.
Since Yahoo! is just a reseller of Melbourne IT, it can take ages to get a response from customer support, or for any changes to be made, since you must first contact Yahoo!, who must then contact Melbourne IT. Often, issues arise if you try to contact Melbourne IT yourself, since you’re not really one of their customers — you’re a Yahoo! customer — , even though they are the only people who can actually help you. Yahoo! has no real power over your domain or WHOIS records, so everything gets slowed down.
I was lucky that I had an easy time transferring registrars. As per ICANN regulations, after Yahoo! was unresponsive for 5 days, the transfer was automatically confirmed.
I was happy, since I had heard horror stories of Yahoo! domain hijacking.

I think you may be mixing apples and bananas… Yahoo’s $12 a month provides domain registration PLUS website hosting. That includes web space, email addresses, various tools and whatever… GoDaddy’s $9.95 is just to host the NAME, not the website. Separating the two functions to two different vendors makes lots of sense.. For example, if Godaddy hosts the name, and you contract with xyz web host company and are later dissatisfied, you can leave xyz and sign up with another web host and just update the Godaddy file with the new info.
You might be thinking to sign up everything with Godaddy, but you should first consider what features you need. For example, my website domain name is with Nicfair (also $9.95 a year) and my website is hosted by a different company that gives me adequate webspace, 5 email addresses and many tools plus a high performance mailing list and great support for $50 a year. Godaddy doesn’t offer those items. I also support a teenager group on a different web host company that gives email ids to all 20 kids and several mailing lists to help them communicate, plus several email tools such as auto redirect and respond… and that’s S25 a year.
I don’t know the quality of Yahoo services, but all I can advise is to not just look at the costs as the services are very different. and if you’re running a business you need to consider service.
On a side note, if Yahoo gave you a free domain name, you need to first confirm whether they own it or you do. Many sites that give free domain names keep the registration to themselves to encourage you to stay with them, once you’ve built your business on the domain name… sneaky, I know, but it’s done…
