How do free hosting providers automatically insert banners?

Well, title says all: how do free hosting providers (such as Yahoo Geocities…) automatically insert banner ads on hosted websites, no matter how the page have been created (web based editor or uploaded via ftp/site manager)?

I understand your answers. Question is: how can they automatically put the scipt in web pages even though pages were created offline (like, with Dreamweaver) then uploaded by FTP/manager?
I’ve already created pages on Geocities but never had to put any code by myself.

They have scripting in the website that will automatically put the banner code on the page when it is served.

Typicly when you are developing a Free website you will notice a area that they will identify as code you must keep on the page this is the scripting code that benny was talking about.
