Why would someone use Data Pipe and not somebody like Godaddy for dedicated hosting?
Posted on Dec 29, 2009 under GoDaddy.com | 5 CommentsI found out the company I work for is paying $1300 a month for hosting with Data Pipe. That is ridiculous!! My own experience has been with smaller sites and we have only pay $3 a month understandably we have a smaller site. But I looked at Data Pipe and they have no prices or information about their servers listed just a bunch of fluff that really doesn’t tell me why they would be so much more expensive than something like Go Daddy’s unlimited Dedicated servers which are at the most $500 and they can support the site and databases that these guys have. I am not a tech geek, but I just don’t understand why someone would pay double for what it looks like, is the same service. I have seen good things about data pipes service but bad things about their price. I have used GoDaddy and their customer service is excellent too. Just curious if anyone can tell me why they should continue to pay this amount. Thanks!

I don’t really like the way godaddy does/did DNS, but you can get a dedicated server with rackspace for ~$450/mo too.
I don’t know what the needs of your website are etc. either. Depending on traffic a dedicated server may not even be required, but at the same time, the cost of IT solutions is often outweighed compared to the cost of down time when they are not working.
Imagine the cost of having to pay your entire sales team to do nothing the entire day while they wait for the website to come back up etc. When you consider scenarios like this one $1300/mo for solid reliable service is nothing for a business that depends on it being up.

Two possible reasons
1. Either your companys network / sysadmin policy did not check other vendors before signing up with data pipe. Or, data pipe must have offered a dedicated server hardware with unlimited bandwidth and storage and 99.5% SLA.
or,
2. Generally Godaddy hostings are cheap only when it comes to shared hosting. In such plans, you website and a hundred more website are stored in a single server with space / bandwidth shared among them. Thats why you are able to see cheap plans. Godaddys or any other cheap hosting provider will not agree a SLA on availability and performance for cheap hostings. They agree for a SLA only on dedicated server hosting.

Hi,
I help run a dedicated server business and we have presence in several facilities in Texas. It’s not clear what Data Pipe is offering your company for $1300. It could be a server with dedicated 1Gbps internet feed or a SAN array that’s attached to the sever or full management and PCI compliance. I doubt it’s just a server and a power cable. So knowing a little bit more about what Data Pipe is offering your company might clear up a few things.
But if it’s just a server, a power cable, and internet feed I have to agree, it’s very pricey. At UNIXy, we offer fully managed dedicated servers of all kinds (very powerful I must say). The prices are on the portal if you’re interested. The most powerful server on our portal is less than one third of that amount!
Also, it’s worth pointing out that prices of dedicated servers have dropped down considerably in the last two years. It’s mainly "budget" providers that are running off of unreliable facilities without redundancy.
