Who has the cheapest .com domain name prices w/No strings attached?

I did a search and a lot of places Claim to be cheap but then it’s a .info domain or they want you to buy a package or they want you to pay 5 years upfront or some nonsense, can I just find a .COM domain that is cheap on a yearly basis with no packages to buy etc?

I know Yahoo! Smallbusiness and GoDaddy and all of those other sites have really great domain name hosting and pricing, but I want to know if there are any other websites that offer cheaper domains. I;m looking for the lowest price I can pay to have a simple domain name for my website.

Why is domain registration cheaper for fewer years?

And I don’t mean multiplying "per year" price by number of years. It is always more expensive to register a domain for more that one year.

Like $2 for one year and $40 for 5 years.

Why is that, and does repeated domain renewal after 1 year cost just as much? ($2 + $2 + …) ignoring inflation.
Or is this just to prevent registrants from becoming inactive over long periods of time?

Which time periods would you choose, and why?

Where are free (or cheap) domain names which last for a long time?

I would prefer not to put a ton of work into programming, only to have my site held for ransom, at a later date.
